I had considered getting my nose pierced since I was in high school, but since I'm a professional actor, I decided against it (would have to wear a retainer for auditions, didn't want holes in my face, etc.) I think those were mainly cop outs because I was nervous about getting it done. lol
I met a WONDERFUL woman who I have decided to spend the rest of my life with. Since I'm not particularly traditional, instead of purchasing wedding rings, I decided to get a nostril piercing to match hers. She had one when we met and she got a second one shortly after we made our relationship official.
Warrior Body Piercing is one of the most popular and reputable piercing establishments in Philly. When I got there, the piercer (who later introduced himself as John) was piercing another employee's teardrop. It was interesting to watch. Afterwards, I had to sign all the waivers and other paperwork. I watched John change his gloves, open a new needle and all his other tools, he cleaned the inside AND outside of my nose with an alcohol pad, then he marked my nose. He told me to take a deep breath in and to exhale when he pushed the needle through, then he handed me a tissue for my "tear." lol One tear fell, but that was more reflex than anything. I barely felt it! It was THAT FAST. I experienced minor discomfort when he put the nose screw in, but it was more discomfort than actual pain. After he put the jewelry in, he explained how to take care of it, gave me a bar of Ivory soap to clean it with, and he even let me choose a free garter... lol I'll give that to my wife, though.
I haven't had ANY swelling, and it BARELY bled. The majority of bleeding happened within 10 minutes after the piercing, and it was inside of my nostril. I was able to gently clean that out the next day. I haven't even had too much crust around the jewelry. I've also figured out how to blow my nose without the screw interferring.
As for my auditions and my teaching job and such - my co-workers didn't even notice it! Not only is it small, but they thought I already had it. However, I still intend to buy a retainer here on PP. I'd rather be on the safe side during auditions.
I look forward to giving PP business.
