Description:

My navel piercing was the first body piercing I had, with the nipple piercings soon to follow in the same session. It was neither a good experience nor a good pierce. The fellow who did it used to run a tattoo parlor and had many years experience. I made his acquaintance when I moved into the across the street apartment. I asked him where I should go to get my nipples and navel pierced, knowing he had been in the business. He said “Me.” He had done a tat on me previously (which I later found was shoddy workmanship) and had all these awards from yesteryear. So I thought better you than someone who just learned it… right? No.
He came over one Saturday and did the pierces in my living room. He had me lie down and marked the pierce points. Since I was inexperienced at the time I did not notice they were too close to the rim of my navel. He did the pierce at a perpendicular angle to my body and too shallow from the navel rim. Then he went to put on the acrylic balls which were soaking in alcohol (which I didn’t know, but he should have, would cause the balls to crack) and they cracked. I had extras that hadn’t been soaked that I was able to put on myself which saved the pierce at the time.
The angle and depth of the pierce were such that the bananabell I had ordered from P.P. would slide up and down in the hole as it bottomed out on my navel. He later changed the jewelry to a surgical stainless CBR after the threat of medical tests had subsided 2 days later. The next week was a lil bit of agony. The CBR’s diameter was much too large and wouldn’t let the pierce heal. Even getting in and out of a car made me yipe like a kicked puppy. I finally decided that the jewelry was too large and went to have it changed a week later. I went to China Doll and Amber changed the jewelry to a shorter shafted 16ga bananabell and the pierce healed nicely afterwards. What irked me was the angle of the hole. I couldn’t wear the jewelry I had all picked out for it because it is a non-standard angle. So…
I decided to do a couple more pierces on either side, thinking that one too shallow one is kind of lonely looking. I waited a while for the first to heal a bit then went back to China Doll and Amber did the two with the spikes and curved BB’s. She also changed out the original hole for a CBR. I’m pretty happy with the piercings* and may end up switching down to a smaller diameter CBR because of my activity level.
*If you look closely it kind of makes a lil devil face. I may name him something just to be odd.
