Description: Ever since I first saw someone with an Industrial piercing I knew I just had to get it done. It looked so different and I just thought it looked cool. I tried to get my mom to take me and sign for me before I turned 18, but she wasn’t too hot on it, so as soon as I was legal I took my I.D. and
went to get it done.
I went to Tommy T’s Body Piercing in Huntington Beach. I saw their cable commercial and then I did my homework online and read about them. I also called and checked out the price. I called them and they said it would run about $80.00 and that included the jewelry, piercing, and aftercare. I had called another place close by and they also wanted $80.00 but it would be done with 2 rings instead of the barbell and I wouldn’t get any aftercare included in that price. I didn’t want to be walking around with 2 hoops sticking off my ear, and when I called Tommy T’s they asked me if I knew the difference in the metals that are available for piercing. I said I wasn’t too familiar and they explained to me the type of metal that they pierce with is medical implant grade and they explained what that meant and I thought it was pretty cool that they took the time to go over that with me.
So I was on my way to Tommy T’s. My boyfriend went with me. He doesn’t have any piercings himself, but he thinks they look pretty awesome, so he was supporting my choice to get an industrial. I went in and a guy approached us and asked me what I was looking for. I told him I wanted to get my industrial pierced and he asked us to follow him to the right case of jewelry. The place had a case of jewelry for each piercing. One case had all different sized rings in it in all different colors and styles. There were at least 4 cases full of navel jewelry. It was pretty impressive. So he showed us the barbells I could pick from. There was a plain barbell, a striped titanium barbell with spikes that came in a bunch of different color combinations, barbells with acrylic balls, and barbells with gem balls in all different colors. I didn’t think I would have so many choices. I decided to go with one of the striped barbells. The guy told me it was made from Medical Implant Grade Titanium and that Titanium was Nickel-free. I know that when I get jewelry at the mall I always try to get the sensitive skin kind that has no Nickel in it because it makes my skin irritated. The last thing I want to do is get pierced and have my jewelry irritate me, so it was good to know that I wouldn’t have that problem. The barbell I chose was baby blue with dark purple stripes. I was so excited; I couldn’t wait to see it in my ear. I paid and filled out my release form. I saw on my release form that my piercer was Tommy T - cool, he actually exists. I always wonder with stores that have a person’s name as their name if the person is real or it just sounded catchy. Well, Tommy T was real and he was going to put a needle through my ear…2 times.
When everything was ready, Tommy asked me to go into the parlor. It was so bright white and it just had the smell of a doctor’s office. I had a seat and he put some cold stuff on my ear. I was getting excited to get the piercing done. It wasn’t your typical cartilage piercing like some of my friend’s had already had for a couple years, this was an industrial. Just the thought of the 2 piercings being connected by the one barbell was cool as hell, but the bar was going to be striped and have spikes, too cool. Anyway, Tommy then wiped off the stuff he had put on my ear, and asked me to lay down on the chair. He washed his hands at the sink and after he had his gloves on we were ready to go. I couldn’t watch what was going on, unfortunately, because it was all happening on the side of my head. He held one side of my ear and pierced it. I’ll admit, it wasn’t painless, but it
was quick. He slid the barbell in and screwed the spike on. Well one side done, gotta do the other. He held the other side nd pierced it, slid the jewelry in and screwed on the other spike. The second piercing hurt a little more, but I was sure as soon as I looked in a mirror that it would be worth the pain. Tommy went over a couple things about checking to make sure the spikes were on tight, but only after I had washed my hands, etc. He told me to relax on the couch for a little while before I took off. I did as he suggested and my boyfriend immediately said, “It looks awesome!” I wanted to look at it myself, so I pulled out my compact and took a look. It was awesome! I couldn’t believe that I finally had it. As much as I wanted it before I turned 18, it was well worth the wait. Before I left, I asked Tommy to go over the aftercare instructions with me. He took the paper he had given me and he outlined the 2 steps to the aftercare: first use antibacterial soap and water to clean off the piercing, but make sure that the soap is diluted and that you rinse off all of the soap afterwards, the second step was to use one of the Dr. Piercing’s Aftercare swabs to wipe around both sides of the piercing, and that was going to heal the piercing. I asked him how often I should do the cleaning and he said once a day. He explained that if I cleaned it more often that could actually irritate the piercing. Interesting, I always figured cleaning it more would be better, but he said that too much cleaning with soap or the aftercare could cause the piercing to become too dry and once your skin is dry it is more susceptible to cracking, and if your skin is cracked it is more open to infection. I thanked him for going over everything with me and then my boyfriend and I left to go get some ice cream to celebrate my new addition.
Getting used to the industrial piercing in my ear has been probably the hardest part of the whole healing. You have to watch when you brush your hair that you don’t snag it with the brush. Also, I was very weary of using public phones. It has been about 2 months since I had it done and it doesn’t hurt at all and it has healed nicely. I know I will be getting another piercing in the near future, and I am definitely going back to Tommy T’s.
Tommy was nice and took the time to go over the jewelry and the aftercare instructions with me. The store was extremely clean and the jewelry selection was huge. If you are thinking of getting this piercing, do your homework and check out the place so you can be sure that your piercing is done in a sterile environment by a qualified piercer. Have a happy piercing!
