March 30, 2005

Description: After making plans with a friend, we finally had the time to go and get pierced together. We made our way to the shop, which was deceptive from the outside. In a less-than-stellar neighborhood in Houston, in a little blue house that had been converted to a piercings-only shop, was Taurian. Inside, the building was cute, well maintained, and super clean.
I already knew exactly what I wanted. A cute pair of tiny rook piercings, tucked into the folds of my ears. I picked out my jewelry, tiny little curved barbells with tiny little balls. We waited for the piercer to set everything up in one of the piercing rooms, then we went in when he was ready.

The room was large, very clean, and welcoming. Classical music was playing in the room, and it was very comfortable. I sat down on the table and let him clean and mark my ears. The left was first, and he took directions very well. I had him move his initial dot just a little closer in, since he said he could do it a little closer.

Once both sides were marked, he pulled the table away from the wall into the middle of the room and had me lay down on the table, which was covered in paper (the kind on the table at doctors, on a roll). By this point, he had already changed his gloves several times. I was impressed by his commitment to cleanliness, he changed gloves for everything he touched!

I laid down on the table, and he instructed me to turn my head so that my cheek was on the table. He then tore a hole in a paper towel to use as a drape, covering all but my ear. From that point, I couldn't see much of what was going on, but the blanks were filled in by the pictures my friend took, and from watching his technique when he pierced her. The story goes like this:

He told me he was going to bend the needle. Naturally, I expected that that meant he was turning a straight needle into a curved one...shaped like a C, or even a U. However, the end result was much more like a very tight J instead. What this meant is that he was not only putting a sharply curved needle though a whole lot of cartilage, but he was also pulling on my ear to try to contort it to get the needle through. A process that literally took a few seconds to get through the cartilage on my rook.

Now, up to this point, my nipples were my most painful piercing, and my worst piercing (as far as technique goes) was my navel, since she actually stopped half way through and had to push again. However, neither of those piercings comes anywhere near the pain I felt when I was having my rooks done. The needle initially going through wasn't bad. It was the pulling of the ears and trying to get the curved part of the needle (which turned into a wider, flatter tube than the initial hole) through my ear.

My first wasn't as bad as my second...even the way my friend tells it! The first was tolerable, though it did hurt quite a lot. However, the second one was absolute hell. It literally felt like the cartilage was just going to tear, and my ear was going to come off. I think it probably would have been less painful if it had! My ear turned bright red as he was trying to contort my ear to fit the needle (wouldn't it have been easier the other way around?) and forcing the needle through, except the area where the piercing was. That part was pure white.

Then, the bleeding started. He got the jewelry in easily, but my ear was gushing. I held a gauze pad on it for several minutes before it stopped bleeding. Having blood running into your ear canal is a pretty creepy feeling. After a couple minutes, it stopped, and voila! I am the proud new owner of two beautiful shiny rooks!

An hour and a couple of Advil later, the pain was gone, and all was right with the world. Well, except that now I want snugs to go with my rooks, the one my friend got is soooo cute! One must plan ahead for these things, you know. Sleeping the first night wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it might be, thankfully. The right side (the first one) I can sleep on with no pain, but the left (the second one) is still rather sore, and movement or pressure on the cartilage is a bit painful. I don't regret them for a second though, even with the pain. They're exactly what I wanted, they're tiny and cute and slightly hidden (you can't see them from the front, they're tucked in far enough), they're just perfect!

One month update: I've had hardly any problems with them, they're not making any more crusties, and they're painless. They may have been excruciatingly painful to have done, but all in all, they've turned out beautifully.
