I always said I would never pierce my nipples, cause they don't need it, they are plenty sensitive already.... just the thought made me cringe. But the more I shopped for body jewelry (I have my nose pierced, and have/had the belly done too, see that story in the navel piercings section), the more cute stuff I saw, and one day I saw a nipple ring I just HAD to have. Call it temporary insanity, but I ordered it, then ran to the bathroom for my piercing needles. I got my mirror, cleaned everything with anti-bacterial soap, had the needle lined up, and started to push... OW!
I am into jewelry, not pain, but I also do not give up easily on something I want, so I was determined to finish the job. Besides, I had already hurt myself, and I didn't want it to be for no reason... I was chatting (via IM) at the time, and my buddy asked if I was using ice to numb it.
I hadn't, but it sounded like a good idea, so I went to the freezer, needle still hanging out the side of my nipple...
Ice cubes were a big help, they not only numbed it, they kept it erect as well, so (I thought) it would be easy to keep it lined up right. Well, when I had the needle through (finally!!! - the flesh there is tough, it was hard to push it through) it looked straight.... but when I put the barbell in, it is tilted.
My original plan was to pierce both, but due to the pain, and the fact that I think it would be hard to match the angle of the first one, I changed my mind... one is enough.
Bottom line, if you plan on doing your nipples, go to a professional. It will be faster, and more likely to come out the way you want them.
