After having other piercings, both professionally and self-done, I decided to try piercing my nipple.
Before actually piercing, I did several dry runs using a stylus instead of a needle to see how best to grip the nipple, where to mark it, see what looked straight, etc. I quickly realized that this wasn't going to be easy--forceps did a lousy job of holding the nipple, and when I pushed from one side the nipple wanted to tilt, making the piercing go off-target.
After trying different aproaches, I finally decided on going freehand, no forceps, with a cork on the exit side to help stabilize.
OK, it's time to do the deed! Sanitize the area and the jewelry, get out the needle, and take a *deep* breath.
The technique I came up with required that I puncture with the needle, then stop and put the cork behind for support. Up to this point, everything was fine. The initial poke didn't hurt much, the cork was in place, all I had to do was drive the needle home!
This was easier said than done. I've read several postings about certain areas of the male 'privates' being tough to get through. I've been there, done that, and let me tell you: pushing the needle through my teeny nipple was MUCH harder than any other piercing I've had. I wasn't going to quit now--it hurt to push (not a cry out hurt, but similar to the throbbing after you smash a finger). but all I could do was give steady pressure. This wasn't going to be a "push-through-we're-done" job.
Finally, the needle emerged. Even with lube, pushing the needle on through felt like sewing leather. I grabbed the circular barbell (externaly threaded), placed the threads inside the needle, and pushed the needle out.
With shaking hands, I screwed the ball on and admired my work. It's straighter than I hoped, and looks great!
The worst part of healing was the bruises left from trying to hold my nipple with forceps. Once they healed, the rest was a piece of cake. The piercing has been comfortable, virtually no discharge, and feels great.
As usual, when my wife saw it she rolled her eyes and said "another one?", but she's declined my offer to take her to get a matching piercing.
Hope this gives some insight as to what a guy experiences when getting a nipple pierced.
